There is no single curriculum that is best for every student. The American curriculum with AP, the IB Diploma, and British A-Levels each prepare students for strong university outcomes, and each one suits a different kind of learner. AP gives flexibility and depth in chosen subjects and carries clear advantages for United States admissions. The IB Diploma asks for breadth across six subject groups plus a research and reflection core. A-Levels ask students to specialize early in three or four subjects. The best fit follows your child’s strengths, interests, and where they hope to study.

Key Highlights

  • The American curriculum with Advanced Placement (AP), the IB Diploma, and British A-Levels are all widely respected pathways, and each one reads differently to university admissions offices.
  • AP offers flexible, subject-by-subject university-level study and holds particular weight for United States university admission, while remaining recognized across the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Asia.
  • The IB Diploma is a fixed two-year program with breadth requirements, and A-Levels concentrate on three or four subjects studied in depth.
  • The right choice depends on your child's learning style, subject interests, and university goals rather than on any single system being universally best.
  • BASIS International School Bangkok teaches the American curriculum with AP and is the American-curriculum option on Rama 2.

Answering the Question First

The American Curriculum with AP

The American curriculum is built on broad, year-by-year study across core subjects, with growing choice as students move into upper grades. Advanced Placement sits on top of that foundation. AP courses are individual, university-level classes designed by the College Board, each ending in a standardized exam scored from 1 to 5.

What makes AP distinctive is choice. A student selects the AP courses that match their interests and target universities, whether that is three, six, or more across their upper-school years. A student drawn to sciences can load up on AP Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. A student headed toward economics or the humanities can build a different set. Most universities award credit or advanced standing for scores of 3 and above, which can shorten degree time or open access to higher-level classes early.

The strengths of AP are flexibility, depth in chosen fields, and wide recognition. The trade-off is that AP does not, by itself, require a fixed breadth of subjects or a mandatory research project, so students and families shape the pathway with guidance from the school.

At BASIS International School Bangkok, AP study begins in Grade 9, and the school offers 22 AP courses in the 2026-2027 school year. In the 2026 exam session, 31 BASIS students sat 123 exams with a 96 percent passing rate, against a global average of 60 percent. The average score was 4.3, compared with a global average of 3.12, and 85 percent of exams scored a 4 or 5. These results reflect how the American curriculum, taught with structure, prepares students for university-level work.

The IB Diploma

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a fixed two-year course of study, typically taken in the final two years of secondary school. Students choose one subject from each of six groups, which include language and literature, a second language, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts (or an additional subject in place of the arts).

Alongside those six subjects, every IB Diploma student completes three core elements: the Extended Essay, an independent research paper of about 4,000 words; Theory of Knowledge, a course examining how we know what we know; and CAS, which stands for Creativity, Activity, Service. Subjects are graded from 1 to 7, and the core can add points toward a maximum score of 45.

The IB Diploma is valued for its breadth and its emphasis on writing, research, and reflection. The trade-off is less flexibility. Because the structure is fixed, a student who wants to concentrate heavily in one area has fewer ways to do so, and the workload across six subjects plus the core is demanding for students who prefer to specialize.

BASIS is not an IB World School and does not offer the IB Diploma. It appears here as one of the alternative systems families weigh.

British A-Levels

Advanced Level qualifications, known as A-Levels, come from the British education system and are studied over two years, usually after IGCSE or GCSE. Students typically choose three or four subjects and study them in real depth. There is little in the way of required breadth, so a student can commit fully to sciences, humanities, or a mix that matches a specific university course.

A-Levels are graded A* through E and are the standard entry route for United Kingdom universities, where offers are often expressed directly in A-Level grades (for example, A*AA for a competitive course). They are also well understood across Commonwealth countries.

The strength of A-Levels is focused depth, which suits students who already know their direction. The trade-off is early specialization: dropping subjects at 16 can narrow options for a student who is still exploring, and the smaller number of subjects gives less room to change course later.

How Universities Read Each System

United States universities are built around the credit system that AP feeds into. Strong AP scores can earn college credit and signal readiness for university-level study, which is why AP holds a clear advantage for United States admission. Admissions officers there are also deeply familiar with how to read an AP transcript.

United Kingdom universities are structured around A-Levels and make grade-specific offers in that currency. They also accept AP and the IB Diploma, often asking for a set of AP scores or an IB point total in place of A-Level grades. The IB Diploma is recognized in more than 100 countries, which makes it a comfortable fit for families who expect to apply across several regions.

In practice, all three systems open doors to strong universities worldwide. What differs is how naturally each one maps onto a given country's admissions process, and how well it showcases a particular student's strengths.

Which Fits Which Student

A student who wants to go deep in chosen subjects, values flexibility, and is considering United States universities is often well matched to the American curriculum with AP. The pathway rewards students who want to build a profile around their strongest interests.

A student who enjoys a wide range of subjects, likes extended writing and research, and wants a single global framework may be drawn to the IB Diploma. The breadth and the core suit learners who thrive on variety and reflection.

A student who already knows their direction, prefers to focus on a few subjects, and is aiming primarily at the United Kingdom or Commonwealth may find A-Levels a natural fit. Early specialization works well when the goal is clear.

Making the Decision That Is Right for Your Family

The most useful question is not which system wins in the abstract. It is which system fits the student in front of you: how they learn, what they love, and where they hope to go. Each of these three curricula can lead to excellent outcomes when it matches the learner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AP or IB better for United States universities?

Both are respected, and neither is required. AP holds a particular advantage because it maps directly onto the United States credit system, so strong scores can earn college credit and signal university readiness. The IB Diploma is also well recognized by United States universities.

Do United Kingdom universities accept AP?

Yes. United Kingdom universities accept AP, usually asking for a set of AP scores in place of A-Level grades. They make offers in A-Levels by default but publish equivalent AP and IB requirements for international applicants.

How are AP exams scored?

AP exams are scored from 1 to 5. Most universities accept a 3 or higher for credit or advanced standing, and more selective programs may ask for 4 or 5 in specific subjects.

Is the IB Diploma harder than AP or A-Levels?

Difficulty depends on the student. The IB Diploma spreads work across six subjects plus a research and reflection core, which suits students who like breadth. AP and A-Levels let a student concentrate, which some learners find more manageable and others find limiting.

Can a student change direction more easily in one system?

AP tends to offer the most flexibility, because students choose subjects and the number of courses. A-Levels ask students to specialize early, and the IB Diploma follows a fixed structure, so both leave less room to change course later.

Does BASIS International School Bangkok offer the IB Diploma?

No. BASIS teaches the American curriculum with AP and is accredited by Cognia. It is not an IB World School. The IB Diploma appears in this article only as an alternative system for comparison.

When does AP study begin at BASIS?

AP courses begin in Grade 9, and BASIS graduates build a pathway of university-level coursework across their upper-school years. The school offers 22 AP courses in the 2026-2027 school year.
