Early Literacy is Thriving in BASIS Early Years
Our kindergarten students are currently meeting all expected reading goals
demonstrating confident decoding, strong comprehension, and the ability to express their ideas clearly through both speaking and writing.
Building Strong Readers in Kindergarten
Kindergarten students develop early literacy skills by accurately writing sounds and graphemes from listening cues and using a range of strategies independently to understand what they read. They demonstrate solid comprehension by reading sentences confidently, matching text to pictures, and communicating ideas through spoken responses and written narratives.

Growing Foundations: 4–5 Year Olds
Our 4–5 year old students are building strong literacy foundations by recognizing upper- and lower-case letter sounds, including short vowel sounds. They are beginning to blend and segment words, form letters with increasing accuracy, and use new vocabulary to talk about stories, ideas, and personal experiences in complete sentences.

Beginning the Journey: 3–4 Year Olds
Our 3–4 year old students are beginning their reading journey by identifying letters and recognizing their own names. They are developing an understanding that print carries meaning, using emerging mark-making connected to learned letters, retelling simple stories, and engaging in short conversations to express their thoughts and emotions with growing confidence.
At BASIS International School Bangkok, early literacy development is supported through a structured, age-appropriate approach that nurtures confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of reading.
