Our BASIS Exchange Experience: What We Learned from Our Time in the U.S.
A Journey We’ll Never Forget
When we signed up for the BASIS Exchange Program, we knew we’d learn new things, but we didn’t realize how much we’d grow. Spending two weeks at BASIS Independent Fremont gave us an inside look into life in another BASIS campus, meeting new people, studying in a new environment, and living with host families who made us feel right at home.
Here’s what we, Tian Tian, Titi, Prann, Jiban, and Pan Pan, learned, loved, and will always remember.

Academics: A Different Rhythm of Learning
Tian Tian:
The academic pacing was similar to ours, but they were a unit behind. Some teachers didn’t know we already had assigned work from Bangkok, so at times, we ended up doing double. It was definitely a new experience in managing my time and balancing them.
One thing that stood out was how accessible the teachers and principals were. We could walk into their office anytime and talk, that openness really surprised me.
Titi:
It was fun seeing how different schools run events like that, very high-energy, colorful, and student driven.
Pan Pan:
Some lessons were behind, so catching up when I came back to Bangkok was tough. But I realized that even when classes differ, the BASIS approach to thinking critically is the same everywhere. That made it easier to adjust back once I understood what I’d missed.

Living with a Host Family: From Strangers to Family
Tian Tian:
At first, it was strange walking into a stranger’s home, new smells, new routines, new people. But within a few days, it felt like family. My host parents always included me in everything, dinner conversations, weekend plans, even inside jokes. The more we talked, the more comfortable I felt. We still stay in touch today.
Jiban:
I learned that American food is massive! Everything felt oversized, the portions, the drinks, even the cereal boxes. But more than that, I learned how families there show warmth. My host family introduced me to their traditions, and I loved being part of that.
If I could host one day, I’d do the same, share Thai traditions and food, and make my guest feel just as welcome.

Our Favorite Moments
Tian Tian:
My favorite part was seeing the Golden Gate Bridge and Attending Homecoming. The energy was unreal. Everyone was so hyped, and it showed me how much school spirit can shape community culture.
Prann:
We got to cycle near the bay, breathe in the fresh air, and play basketball at lunch. The mix of academics, nature, and sports made each day feel balanced.
Titi:
One unforgettable memory was visiting Berkeley. Sitting in the lecture hall and watching a real university class made me visualize myself studying abroad in the future.
Pan Pan:
I loved the Beach Fair, the roller coasters, the music, the whole vibe. It reminded me how learning also happens outside classrooms.
Jiban:
The eye dissection class! It was part of an elective, and I was so proud that I did it. And when my host’s son invited me to join a club, I jumped in, chaotic but fun!

The Takeaway: It Was All Worth It
We all agreed, the experience was absolutely worth it.
Yes, there were challenges, but what we gained was priceless: independence, new friendships, cultural understanding, and the confidence to adapt anywhere in the world.
From standing under the Golden Gate Bridge to eating our first American breakfast with our host families, every moment was a reminder that education isn’t confined to classrooms, it’s found in conversations, experiences, and connections.
